TEACHING PHILOSOPHY & METHODS:

I have varied musical interests and experiences and am happy to tailor your instruction to include your
musical tastes in our basic studies.
In addition to classical, I have studied and/or performed old-time and bluegrass fiddling, folk, blues, rock,
avant-garde, and some jazz.   Learning to play an instrument can be challenging and sometimes
frustrating. Therefore,
I aspire to keep my students in touch with what brought them to the instrument in the first place through
studying the music they love.

Technique is the foundation of my teaching of any style of music. I use traditional, classical methods and
literature with elements of the Suzuki method and of Paul Rolland’s action method. (Please note:
although I use Suzuki literature and some aspects of the the method, I am not a certified Suzuki teacher
at this time.) All students will have technical studies regardless of their musical style preferences.

Playing-related injuries are all too common among professional musicians, amateurs and students. The
groundwork for these problems may be laid in the first stages of study. Prevention of these problems is
of the utmost importance to me as a player and a teacher. Therefore, I strive to impart a healthy, whole-
body approach to learning the instrument. Good posture through correct spinal alignment and stretching
are an important part of my approach.

My students have ranged in age from six to 86!   I welcome students of all ages and abilities. Students
will have the opportunity to perform in Academy recitals.

ABOUT ME:

The majority of my performance experience and formal training are in the classical realm. However, I also
studied old-time fiddling with NEA honoree Bob Holt of Ava, Missouri and started my own band, Bell Dora,
in 1999.
In addition to playing the violin I also sing, play guitar, and write songs. One of my songs is on the
soundtrack of the independent, comic documentary, 10 MPH, which recently won Best Documentary at
the Solstice Film Festival. I have performed with numerous rock, country, folk, blues, and pop bands.
